Hull & Larson • The Goose Is Getting Fat • Arabica CF-05

"Dakota Dave Hull and Kari Larson have created an airy celebration of strings and wood that provides relief from canine choruses of "Jingle Bells" and holiday Muzak. They intersperse gems from Finland, Ireland, and Italy with more familiar titles, and the sounds they create on ukulele, mandolin, and archtop, flattop, Weissenborn, tenor, National, and piccolo guitars range from intimate and reverential to swingy and playful. The darkly whimsical "Christmas Is Coming" is a made-to-order sequel to ‘The Nightmare before Christmas.’ (Arabica)" —Ben Elder, Acoustic Guitar Magazine

Hull & Larson • Moonbeams • Arabica CF-04

Dakota Dave Hull and Kari Larson obviously like mixing instrumental textures as well as musical traditions—try a cute-as-a-bug "Mr. Sandman" for two ukuleles, sandwiched between the novelty number "Goofus" and the venerable "Rights of Man" for National steel guitars, or a mandolin/uke arrangement of the Irish-American "Three Pony Bit" medley. The original Hull and Larson sound shows up on the hard-swinging archtops of "Windchill"; the guitar and mandolin interplay of Scott Joplin’s "The Chrysanthemum" and the driving breakdown "Clark’s Ride"; and the sweet, melancholy six-string and tenor guitars of "You Don’t Know Me." Hull’s classic rag "The Second Chance" and Larson’s reflective "Halfway There" demonstrate hot solo chops. (Arabica) —Russell Letson, Acoustic Guitar Magazine

Hull & Larson • Double Cappuccino • Arabica CF-03

Archtop guitars feature prominently in this first collaboration between Dakota Dave Hull (guitar) and Kari Larson (mandolin, guitar, tenor guitar). Their material includes Tin Pan Alley standards ("Blue Moon"), bluegrass-festival chestnuts ("Over the Waterfall"), world music ("Rhythmes Gitanes," "Lord Inchiquin"), and three sprightly originals ("Double Cappuccino," "Pretty Little Tune," and "Ghost Story"). The smart arrangements and classy playing evoke classic duets by Eddie Lang and Lonnie Johnson or Carl Kress and Dick McDonough, and the live and clean recording lets you hear the instruments in loving detail.
